Since the swooping season has startet earlier, bird experts are advising Victorians that magpies may become more dangerous while wear face masks in public.
Magpies can identify up to 100 different people, but when masks are introduced to the mix, they may now be seen as threats to those individuals who were initially considered to be friendly.
“What we’re really fascinated with is whether, especially in Melbourne in lockdown, is if you’re wearing a mask, they may not be able to recognise you,” Birdlife Australia’s Sean Dooley said.
“If you think a magpie has it in for you, you’re probably right.”
Studies in Queensland has also shown that magpies are also regarded as reminders of bad experiences to swoop people who are wearing masks.
