Over 4,000 chickens have died on Adelaide’s South Eastern Freeway as a result of a major truck crash.
The truck was driving between Hahndorf and Mt Barker when one of the truck’s wheels became overheated by assuming the bearings.
The chickens were on their way to Cavan ‘s Gourmet Poultry meat factory.
The truck driver claims he saw flames coming from his cabin’s passenger side and pulled over straight away.
More than 900 chickens died amid desperate attempts to extinguish the flames as the fire spread through the cages.
The RSPCA was called to the scene, and a number of injured chickens were forced to euthanize on site.
An RSPCA spokeswoman reports that the surviving chickens have suffered from respiratory problems as a result of the blaze and will now need to be put down.
A total of 4,200 animals had died from the flames.
Fire inspectors attended the scene and are seeking to determine the cause of the incident.
