An extremely rare ‘ginger’ seal pup was found in Russia, but experts are worried that it may be shunned by its fellow seals because of its unusual colouring.
The pinniped, which has been seen in the Okhotsk Sea, has pink flippers and blue eyes all over his body as well as ginger hair.
Experts also said that there are around one in 100,000 chances of a partial albino birth, such as this, and that its condition means there is a risk of its peers being rejected. Poor little man.
Biologist Vladimir Burkanov says the seal, located on Tyunleny Island, was called The Ugly Duckling, which if you ask me is a little harsh. She’s a little cutie, I guess.
He said: “This pup looks well fed and was very active, so its mother clearly gave it plenty of milk.
“Other seals don’t pay too much attention to it in a somewhat worrying manner, so something is not quite right with it.
“But it is not getting chased or bitten.”
If it ends up being completely rejected, wildlife experts are ready on hand to save it and send it to a dolphinarium, where it will be cared for.
But it’s not all bad news, because it’s known that a similar-looking male fur seal has grown up on Bering Island, and is now about five or six year old.
