Police opened fire this morning through a car window in Melbourne after the driver violated restrictions on curfew and allegedly drove his vehicle to officers.

The Public Order Response Team confronted the 64-year-old driver after he pulled into a service station just after 1.20am at the Princess Highway’s Point Cook Road exit, Altona Meadows.

The driver allegedly ignored directions from the police to turn off his vehicle, and instead drove to officers.

“An approaching police officer had to take evasive action and discharged his firearm,” Victoria police said in a statement.

Police have been forced to shoot through a 64YO driver’s window after he drove at them at an Altona Meadows servo. It was 1.20am & officers asked him to stop so they could question why he was out after curfew. He’s now in hospital (medical cond) under guard @9NewsMelb pic.twitter.com/CwOR9Oz2o9

The car was followed for a brief time across suburban suburbs, until the man was arrested in Harrison Court.

The man is reportedly in hospital under police surveillance for an underlying medical condition.
