As part of the City of Perth’s efforts to restore its relationship with the LGBTIQ+ community, THE Northbridge Piazza could be renamed.
One of the remarks made to Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas and councillors at their first full meeting since the council election and a week after Mr Zempilas made controversial comments on gender in his capacity as a radio announcer, was the idea to call it Equality Square.
Other speakers asked the council during the 45-minute question span to set up a scholarship for trans women and to resign en masse.
With a five-minute apology for his remarks and a dedication to better understanding the gender-diverse culture, Mr Zempilas opened the conference.
“I thank my fellow councillors for uniting behind me despite the difficult situation I put them in by agreeing to participate in training with me,” he said.
“This is not how we had hoped to have our first ordinary council meeting but the error on my behalf last week needed to be addressed.
“Because of the good grace shown to me in the room by my fellow councillors and staff members I’ve got an opportunity to make the most of something that I did poorly.”
