Kmart is not the only spot to be flocked to today by newly free Melburnians, with news of filled parking lots, door lines and “Boxing Day level crowds” at Chadstone Shopping Centre.
“You literally could not pay me enough to get within 100m of Chadstone today,” one social media user wrote, while another warned Victorians could “say hi to the third wave”.
Center manager Michael Whitehead told 3AW this morning that despite its past links to a COVID-19 outbreak, there is no need for shoppers to avoid going to the centre.
“We’ve put in a new COVID-safe control room…looking at occupancy density, CCTV, some really innovative heat mapping technology,” he said.
In order to “keep people moving and not congregating” social distancing officers also monitor the centre.
Mr. Whitehead invited the residents of Melburn to try to visit the centre during the week.
“We know that the weekend is going to be our busiest time, particularly between 11 and 3, so if you can, come in during the week, come in early in the morning,” he said.
“Come with a list, come with some purpose.”
