A five-month – old baby has died after the child’s pram was hit by a van.
The incident occurred on Monday morning in Northcote, Auckland.
The driver said the crash was a nightmare.
“I can’t believe it,” he told the New Zealand Herald.
Saksena said that he was driving home when the pram rolled down a hill into his vehicle’s lane.
“The pram went flying down the hill right in front of me,” he said.
“I didn’t see it coming … I slammed on the brakes but it was too late.”
The driver went to see the baby after pulling over.
“There was no one there, and then the mum rushed out to see what had happened,” he said, adding the mother was in shock and said she’d forgotten to put the brakes on the pram.
In order to support the child and mother, many people rushed out.
In a critical state, the baby was rushed to the hospital but died.
Witness Kevin Walker said that the pram had reached the middle of the vehicle and the basket had been thrown about 15 metres .
“Everything just stops when you see something like that. It’s just absolutely heartbreaking,” he said.
New Zealand Police’s Serious Crash Unit is investigating the crash.
