Great news for travellers, with the opening of a new flight route between the Gold Coast and Hobart today.
Jetstar has confirmed that it will release new flights in December, following confirmation that the borders of Tasmania will be open to most states from 26 October onwards.
It is estimated that around 90 local jobs will be generated, and around $11 million will be injected into the economy.
Gareth Evans, CEO of Jetstar Group , says they are really excited about launching the service.
“It’s great help to be able to reconnect family and friends and give more people the opportunity for a holiday after what has been tough period for many.
“This new service will also help to boost tourism in the Gold Coast and Hobart, creating jobs and supporting the local economy, and means more of our people are back at work, which is great news too.
Jetstar is holding a flash sale at midday today to celebrate the new route, which will include 1,500 fares from just $89.
The fares will be valid between December and June 2021 for various travel times.
This is the first time since 2013 that we have had a direct flight to Tasmania.
Tourism Minister Kate Jones of Queensland says the coronavirus outbreak has provided a good opportunity.
“What we’ve seen is a lot of competition in the skies, where with the lack of aircraft, many airlines have been putting their planes on the most profitable routes.
“What we’ve seen with Covid-19 is an opportunity to bring back this flight between Hobart and the Gold Coast, and Jetstar and the government expect that it will absolutely sell like hot cakes.
“So many people have not been able to travel, but because we’ve been able to keep Queenslanders safe, it is now our opportunity to see not only people from Hobart, but people from the Gold Coast taking advantage of these $89 tickets between the two cities,” Minister Jones said.
