It is known that Victoria has reported more than 650 new cases of coronavirus overnight.
Premier Daniel Andrews is scheduled to confirm the increase in infections when he addresses the media on Sunday afternoon.
He is also expected to introduce new proposals for the restriction.
The state registered 397 new COVID-19 cases, and three deaths on Saturday.
There were 49 new cases that could not be traced to a source.
“We’ve got numbers that are too high. We’ve got every reason to believe these current settings will not get the job done, that we’ll need to do more,” he said.
“We can’t open up again at these sort of levels, and therefore there’s very detailed work being done about what possible next steps might look like.”
Whether those “next steps” are a shutdown in the New Zealand model, where everything is closed except supermarkets, health services and petrol stations, or a looser version is likely to be revealed on Sunday.
