A top medical expert has called for restrictions on Stage 4, saying coronavirus spread in Victoria is “very worrying” and more needs to be done.
Australian Medical Association President Dr Tony Bartone warned that Victoria is “on the precipice” of a fatal crisis.
“We really do need some really urgent collaboration and action at this point,” he told Today, warning that next week will otherwise be “extremely daunting and challenging”.
Dr Bartone said that step 4 measures should be implemented by Victoria as cases of viruses continue to increase.
“Stage four would essentially curtail all but really essential services,” he said.
“What we really need to realise is unless we stop the mixing and the spreading of the virus in our community we’re not going to be able to keep the lid on these numbers.
“These numbers are really concerning. They’re going up rather than plateauing.
“We expected it would take 10 to 14 days for them to start to come down but going up really points to the fact that we need to introduce Stage 4.”
It comes after yesterday’s declaration by Victoria of a new 428 cases taking the state’s total to 5165.
