A travel bubble could be in place within weeks between New Zealand and New South Wales.
Continued coronavirus suppression in the state has led to renewed travel talks.
It is known that without having to quarantine, it will possibly begin with New Zealanders permitted to travel to NSW, which should begin within weeks.
That would offer a much-needed boost to the tourism industry.
Soon afterward, NSW residents could do the same with New Zealand.
The hope is that by Christmas the plan will be ready.
Australia was planning to accept travellers, Trade Minister Simon Birmingham said.
“We know that our tourism industry is one of the most heavily impacted by the restrictions,” he told reporters on Sunday.
He said the plan was to be in place by the end of the year to fly through the ditch.
