After decades of suppressing who he really was, a 90-year-old granddad has come out as gay.
After realising during the lockdown that he no longer wanted to live a lie, Kenneth Felts from Colorado took the courageous move.
Talking in the US on the 3rd Hour of Today show, Kenneth said that after the start of the pandemic he had begun writing a book, but thought it wouldn’t be successful if he didn’t open up about his sexuality.
Kenneth, a veteran of the Navy, said: “I had been keeping this secret most of my life, and I had planned to take it to the grave.
“In 1942, when I was 12, I realised I was gay. If you came out, it really would cost you – your family, your job, all of your relationships. You would immediately be called a pervert.”
Yet Kenneth has not always hidden his true feelings-he once had a two-year relationship with a guy, called Phillip.
Looking back at the time, Kenneth said: “It was a void in my life that had suddenly been filled by another person who, apparently, had some of the same needs.
“And we just melted into each other.”
Sadly the pair broke up because of Kenneth’s christian beliefs, and since then he’s been married and divorced, and even had a girlfriend, Rebecca, who came out to him in 1995 as gay.
Yet Kenneth wasn’t willing to do the same for yet another 25 years.
“One day I was talking to Rebecca and I just happened to mention, ‘I wish I had never left Philip,'” he said.
