According to a family member, two well-known Florida physicians, a father and son, have died from Covid-19 complications.
In the early morning hours of Father’s Day, Dr. Carlos Vallejo, 57, and his wife, Dr. Jorge Vallejo, 89, were hospitalised. Both had died five weeks apart, Charlie Vallejo, son of Carlos, said.
Dr. Jorge Vallejo was a retired obstetrician and gynaecologist who worked in the Miami area and treated celebrities such as salsa singer Celia Cruz for more than 45 years. He’s been known for delivering one of the world’s smallest babies, a 22-week-old weighing 15 ounces.
In 1965, he moved his family from Guantanamo, Cuba, to Miami including a 2-year-old Carlos.
All three of his sons studied medicine, too.
Dr. Carlos Vallejo was on the frontlines of the pandemic, suiting up in full personal protective equipment and treating dozens of Covid-19 patients at any point in time.
Charlie Vallejo told CNN his father treated his patients like family.
“He cared too much,” Charlie Vallejo said. “He died a hero.”
